Major Mining Project 2011:

Most recently, Lake Excavating has been working at the Gibraltar Mine, just outside of Williams Lake, BC.  As one of the largest open-pit mines in all of Canada, Lake Excavating has conducted a number of projects here.  This includes working on the GDP3, the Tailings Dam Raise and Mud Haul.

Highway 32 Slope Stability

Lake Excavating Ltd. worked alongside Thurber Engineering Ltd. to complete the Highway 32 Slope Stability project for Alberta Transportation in the Town of Whitecourt.  Lake Excavating completed 30,000 m³ of granular borrow material placed for slope stabilization abutment.  In addition to this, Lake Excavating completed borrow pit development and restoration, as well as replacement of native topsoil and placement of imported growth medium and hydro-seeding.

Other Major Projects

City of Fort St. John Sanitary Trunk Main

Lake Excavating worked alongside engineers from Urban Systems Ltd. to install a Sanitary Trunk Main for the City of Fort St. John.  This project included the installation of a 3,000 m sanitary main line, up to 10 m deep, with diameters of 750, 900 and 1,200 mm’s.  In addition to this scope of work, Lake also constructed 24 PVC and concrete manholes, tie-in and out flow structures, and an 80 m Augered Crossing and piping installation under CN Rail, utilizing PVC-fused pipe.

Mount Polley Mine Dam Raise

Providing earth works for Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley Dam Raise.  With the support of engineers from Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd., Lake Excavating provided earth works for a 3 m dam raise.  This project required loading, hauling, placing, and compacting of 120,000 m³ for the Till Core Dam Raise, as well as 25,000 m³ for the filter and transition zone materials. 

City of Fort St. John Enerplex Complex

This project consisted of installing a rain water reservoir tank, containing a 50,000 gallon underground cast-in-place and re-enforced concrete tank for the City of Fort St. John.  This tank is used to store roof-top rain water for irrigation.  Another project Lake completed at this complex was for DGS Astro-Paving.  Here, Lake completed major storm sewer works including Storm-Ceptors and diversion chambers, as well as excavating and sub-grading work for the parking lot site.

Aquatera Sanitary Trunk Main Phase 1

Installation of an 850 m Sanitary Main line with 1,200 mm diameter of PVC, up to 11 m deep in Grande Prairie, AB.  With the support of engineers from Focus Corporation, Lake installed the Sanitary Trunk Main, constructed 8 2,200 mm manholes and completed live tie-ins to the existing trunk main.   

Cariboo Regional District Transfer Station Operation

This project was carried out from 2004 until 2010 in Williams Lake, BC.  Lake Excavating provided staff and managed the transfer station for civil waste disposal for the Cariboo Regional District.  This project comprised of reloading, hauling and delivering of civil waste by means of tractors and 75 m³ walking floor trailers.

Retail Development
A 40 Acre Retail development site which included major off-site roadways and services. Site development and pad completion for Wal-mart Canada as the primary tenant. Site included moving 700,000m3 of materials and 100,000m3 of blasted rock.

A 45 acre Industrial park built from scratch under a design build agreement. Included the construction of roads, curbs, gutters, water, sewer, building pad completion and a 10 acre storm water retention pond.

Commercial, Retail, Industrial Site Services

Blue Ridge Rd. Extension and Upgrading. – Industrial

• Upgrading approximately 600m of existing two-lane rural cross-section roadway into an arterial standard four lane urban cross-section.
• Project required crossing a major electric transmission facility as well as extension of water and sanitary sewer trunk mains.

• A 400 m extension of an existing four lane urban cross-section arterial roadway to service a new development area
• Included construction of a major storm sewer trunk line and extension of water and sewer trunk mains

• Construction of approximately 250 m of urban cross-section asphalt roadway
• Installation of storm sewer
• Rehabilitation of open ditch drainage
• Extension of existing water distribution system
• Installation of sewer services on existing deep sanitary truck main

• 30 acre subdivision constructed in a low lying area
• Required extensive organics removals
• Drainage included construction of a 2.5 km long drainage ditch, averaging 4 to 5 m deep with 6:1 side slopes
• Subdivision was brought to grading by compacting in place excavated material from the ditch

• Upgrading approximately 1 km of a major arterial roadway from two lane rural cross-section to four lane urban cross-section

• Relocation of a signalized highway intersection from 43rd Ave. and 42nd Ave. for improved traffic safety
• Traffic patterns at 43rd Ave. changed to right in and right out only
• Construction of approximately 120 m of 42nd Ave. from Sunset Boulevard, Kepler Street
• Intersection improvements at Highway 43
• Construction of acceleration and deceleration lanes and median treatment on Highway 43

• Site grading for a new clubhouse development
• Removed 3 m of material from under the building footprint
• Supply and placement of 4m of fill compacted to 100%
• Excess fill required to raise building floor elevation above flood plain
• Site servicing included installation of a sanitary sewer lift station and associated mains
• Relocated fire hydrant and installed water service

• Spruceview Phase 6 and 7
• Spruceview Phase 8 (Poplar Drive to Mink Creek Road) – servicing of a 20 lot residential subdivision with site grading to ensure protection from the projected Athabasca River 100 year flood level, water, sewer, storm sewer, roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
• Spruceview Phase 9 (Reay Court & Rivers Place) – a 36 lot residential subdivision with site grading to ensure protection from the projected Athabasca River 100 year flood level
• Water, sewer, storm sewer, roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks

• 18 residential lot subdivision with site grading to ensure protection from the projected Athabasca River 100 year flood level
• water, sewer, storm sewer, roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks

• Site servicing and grading for a 24 unit townhome development
• Included water sanitary and storm sewer water, and site grading

• A 61-lot expansion of the existing River Valley Estates Mobile Home Park

• Remediation of structural fill under store slab by removing 40,000 m³ of unsuitable material and replacing with approved material compacted in place
• Material removed from under the slab area was moisture conditioned and utilized for site grading

• Work completed on a very tight schedule to facilitate store opening
• Constructed site access road from original ground to finished asphalt in seven days to accommodate heavy truck traffic (required to stock store prior to opening)
